A large part of my professional portfolio is made up of my illustrations done within the trading card industry. I have been producing artwork for trading card companies for many years as a "Sketch Card" artist.
"What is a sketch card?" you might ask. Well, back in the old days when you bought a pack of baseball cards you'd get a stick of gum & you might be lucky enough to find a rookie card. These cards were highly collectible and worth much more than a standard pack inserted card. These special cards were basically incentives for people to spend the money on packs, boxes, or cases of cards. Over time incentive cards became a standard within the trading card industry and were expanded to include foil cards, 3D Lenticular cards, autographed cards, wardrobe cards, puzzle cards , art cards and the list goes on and on. Some of these incentive cards are more rare and valuable than others due to the limited number available within a set of cards. Thats where I come into play, I am Contracted by the individual company to create original artwork in accordance with the companies strict guidelines an regulations. These pieces of artwork are used for print and for random insertion into packs as an incentive for collectors. Some sets will guarantee you a sketch card in every pack, while other sets like The Walking Dead or The Hobbit will require a much larger investment in order to obtain an original sketch. Investors will sometimes buy many cases in order to obtain these cards and trade or flip them online, I have seen 2.5x3.5 inch sketch cards sell for thousands of Dollars.
Sketch Cards were made largely popular within the Adult entertainment industry and expanded to fantasy art and comics. Now art cards can be found within any trading card genre that you can think of, From horror & comic, to baseball and UFC. The Term Sketch Card was coined at the humble beginnings of the industry when it really was just a quick sketch. However the industry has evolved in such a way that competition within the industry demands that you put forth a fully realized piece of art which can sometimes take many hours to complete.
I enjoy working on these pieces of artwork despite the many hand cramps due to the small size. Sketch cards force you to draw things you never would have, can teach you discipline and how to meet deadlines.
I have worked on licensed projects such as The Walking Dead, The Hobbit, DC Comics Women of Legend, DAWN new horizons, Women of Dynamite Comics, War of The worlds, Witchblade and many more.
I have included some samples below, if you would like to see more just click on the picture, or you can navigate through the Gallery tab at the top. Please note that the links marked NSFW may contain some tasteful nudity, please don't be offended, it is all part of the job, but if you don't wish to see any of that just avoid those links!
